Surface Mount- Background and What it
is
Around 1943 printed circuit technology
came into heavier use by the
USA to
make rugged radios for use in World War II. After the war, the invention
was released for commercial use. Through-hole assembly was used
extensively as a method of attaching electronic components to a Printed
Circuit Board (PCB) from then until the
late 1980s when Surface-Mount technology (SMT)
became more widely used.
Our goal in this Newsletter is to provide a brief
primer on the benefits offered by both techniques and show how Ellenby
Technologies can best serve you and your needs for Printed Circuit
Assemblies.

ADVANTAGES of Surface Mount Technology
versus Through-hole
- Smaller lighter components
- Denser layout for space management of
product design
- Less expensive PCB’s because they can be
smaller
- Easier to automate assembly improving
efficiency and production speed
- Easier to shield from EMI/ RFI resulting
in better predictability of components
- Small errors in component placement are
corrected automatically
- Many enhanced technologies only available
in Surface Mount
- SMT parts generally cost
less

|
DISADVANTAGES of Surface Mount
Technology
-
More sophisticated manufacturing makes smaller
volumes less cost effective
-
Must have high volume to take advantage of
components on tape and reels
-
Component level repair could be more difficult
-
Manual prototype assembly could be very difficult
and costly
-
Visual inspection
difficult
